Web server downloads files instead of displaying

So I have server installed, web activated and allow folder listing enabled (temporarily until I fix this problem). I have a symbolic link from a file that I want displayed to my default web server location. The problem is that when I try list the contents it downloads a file rather than list it. For example; localhost/file_name will download something rather than display the contents of file_name??? Please help
